Epiphone Entourage!

Temple of Light

Recommended Posts

I've owned several Epiphones, including a mandolin.

The only electrics I have right now are my Rickenbacker, Epi Les Paul Custom, Epi Casino Coupe, and a purple Strat.

Nice Coupe! I was impressed when I recently reviewed one. I have a pair of Epiphones at the moment - both of which I purchased new; a '96 MIK Limited Edition Les Paul in Trans Red, and a '01 MIK (Peerless) Casino in Cherry... I put some pics of my Casino in the Casino Coupe review so people can compare the relative sizes of them. Here's one for those who would rather not click on the review link (above) - although if you're interested in the Coupe, you should take a look at the review. :):o

My Casino is one of my favorite guitars. I have much more expensive instruments, but I just love the way that thing plays and sounds. It's definitely a lifetime keeper.

Here's a picture of the Les Paul with a few Fenders...

I've owned a number of Epiphones over the years and currently have two. My wife bought me a 339 Ultra for my birthday last year, and just last week I got an EJ-200 jumbo acoustic for $20 that a guy found in a dumpster. It needed a lot of work, but has turned out to be a really good playing and sounding guitar.

I picked up my first Epi just the other week - a Wildkat. Ton of guitar for very little money - 18:1 Grover machines, double wax potted Alnico 5 P-90's and I just love the controls with master volume. Saves me doing a ton of rewiring. Only gripe is the pups don't hum cancel, but that is a relatively easy fix. Love the retro headstock and Gretsch vibe.

Its developing other issues now though. I gave up using the heavier 11's and 12's on it because the top began separated from the neck block and started warping up. I epoxied that and arrested the issue from progressing any more, but the top is warped..

I heard someone else mention this too. Somehow I had the idea that having the stop bar anchored in the solid center block would prevent this from happening ?

Cool looking guitar! :philthumb:

I've always thought those looked really cool and like they'd be a lot of fun. What is the neck size / shape / profile like on them?

Thanks. I'm not the best to talk about neck profiles as I play everything from a 5 string bass to mandolin and have learned to adapt to the instrument. That said, it's about in the middle - not thin like a Wizard and certainly not a baseball bat. I think it would be called a D with soft shoulders - so it's flatter than a C but not as square-ish as a D. I'm probably not making much sense other than I find it very comfy in the hand - like the 3 bears, it's not too fat and not too thin, LOL.

They call it a "semi hollow" but I think chambered is more appropriate. The body looks like it started as a solid chunk of mahogany - very nicely figured, I might add - that was routed and capped. A true semi is an assemblage of top, bottom and sides with a solid piece running through the center. That makes this heavier than a semi but lighter than something like a Les Paul.

In the props department, this is the only guitar I've been able to take off the wall [in a Guitar Center] and not have to do anything other than lowering the bridge a bit. Every other stringed instrument I've purchased has required a fret level and dress - even my Ric - but this one was perfect from the beginning. There is a sticker on the back that say's it was inspected and setup in the US [by 35], and my hat goes off to a great job done. After the horror stories I've read about QC over the years, my experience has certainly belied them all.

And you're right - it is a lot of fun to play and I really like the look of it.

My number one right now is a ES-339 Pro I picked up used at Guitar Center about 6 months ago. I like to tinker with my guitars but this one needs nothing IMO. Beautiful fit & finish, comfortable size (for me 335 sized semi hollows feel to big), nice neck profile (I've seen it described as "D" shaped), & humbuckers with coil splits...

Reissue Sorrento, Royal Olive finish. Great guitar...well, they all are, but that one is particularly quite nice.

I'd sell it, make a reasonable offer, comes with a "period correct" case too :) I think Epiphone makes the coolest guitars ever. They are just great guitars imho. Not much more to say.

Radman, those switches are just a more intuitive pickup selector. I can have all three on at once, do a Tele style neck/bridge combo, and the obvious Strat combinations. The silver pot is a push/pull pot that splits the humbucker. It's a 1988 S-800. The Steinberger tremolo system is a bit of a mystery, and my high E string broke when I restrung it and tried to tune it with the tremolo lock detached. I suppose I'll have to settle for keeping it locked or keep it in the original E-flat tuning.

I need to post new pics of my three Epiphones, though.

Edit...

Unfortunately, other than my iPhone, my digital camera is almost ten years old and I don't have much natural lighting in my abode.
