I have several and love how they are fundamentally great places to start to building a custom instrument rivaling guitars costing thousands more, namely Gibson PRS, Fender Custom Shop etc... for those not in the upper tax bracket it's a huge value and selection. Post your pics if you got em', share your stories too if you have a particular fondness of a particular model, what style you play on it and where has the music you made on it taken you? Members Chordite Posted March 23, 2015 Members Share Posted March 23, 2015 ( NB I'm not trying to subvert the thread into an LP vs Strat, just giving my motivation) I bought an EPI LP Standard because I thought it might be able to end my Strat addiction if I actually lived with a Paul rather than borrowing LPs short term. Alas It didn't work for me and it languishes. It is a nice guitar but the only plus I got was sustain. Reports say it is almost up there with the Gibson despite being a lot less expensive. So perversely I would say if you are an LP man on a budget you won't be disappointed with an Epi. Get down to the store and try one. Unfortunately (as posted a year or so back) mine is developing the infamous headstock crack almost invisible but as an honorable man I can't sell it now Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Getting some money for it is better than letting it sit and it needs a good home...needs played. I am a big fan of Epiphone. Played on big stages and small and of course at home. A real work horse that does everything it's big brothers do at $300 and couple spare pickups (like the old 80's Dimarzio Distortion!). Still love other guitars including 33's tele's and strats. When I need big big loud crunch...or some rich full jazz (and a lot in between too, I guess, LOL) it's the Epiphone Les Paul....which is a bolt on by the way. It was set up perfectly (for me) and is a joy to play. I play it through a Fender Mustang I and I can get every sound I want out of it. I chose it over another, more expensive, Epi LP and do not regret it one bit. I could go on for days about how great this guitar is for me. My acoustic is also a cheap Epi. The only electrics I have right now are my Rickenbacker, Epi Les Paul Custom, Epi Casino Coupe, and a purple Strat. I have a Lag classical and a Steinberger bass as well. Still a sound of its own though, I can't get an real "strat" sound from it. The build quality is amazing on mine. Members bernardo gui Posted March 24, 2015 Members Share Posted March 24, 2015 I bought a "vintage" 1989 Epiphone Les Paul Standard 2 years ago.This is an interesting guitar, it's an Epiphone with a Gibson "Open Book" headstock.I gave it a COMPLETE makeover: PLEK'ed fretboard, Tonepros Bridge & Tailpiece, Tonepros Tuners, Gibson Classic 57 & Classic 57 Plus pickups, vintage 50's wiring harness. I decided to try a Fender so I traded it for an MIM Strat. this was back before I got into modding and partscasters. Sometimes wish I'd kept the Custom and upgraded the pickups and pots. I ended up trading both of mine for that reason as well as some intonation issues I could never resolve. That said, I wish I had more Epiphones. Members WRGKMC Posted March 24, 2015 Members Share Posted March 24, 2015 I owned a 67's Riviera with mini Humbuckers back in 1972. It was a great guitar, built as good as any Gibson at the time with a really Slim neck that fit my hand well. They were actually a higher end model, above the Casino the Beatles made so popular I bought an EPI DOT about 10 year ago thinking it might fill the void of the fond memories I had of the guitar and it never came close. The DOT isn't a bad guitar it's just not as good as it looks. I did allot of pickup swapping to find something closer to what I wanted. All the hardware needed replacement over that tine too. Its developing other issues now though. I gave up using the heavier 11's and 12's on it because the top began separated from the neck block and started warping up. I epoxied that and arrested the issue from progressing any more, but the top is warped. The truss is maxed out too. I'm only using 9's on it and its flat an all, but I'd be worried about snapping or stripping the truss trying to adjust it for heavier strings. Its eventually going to need new frets and when I do that I can use frets with thicker tangs. This spreads the fret board a bit and I'll be able to relieve the truss tension down so there's less pressure. Neither of these issues are affecting the playability at the moment but without my intervention this guitar would be in a pawn shop and someone else's problem by now. The problems may eventually cause the instrument to become unplayable. This has shown me the builds on the lower end versions do use lower quality materials and when compared to the other Vintage EPI's and Gibson's I've owned, they just don't come close. I did buy this guitar knowing that though so I don't feel like I was cheated. These instruments are mainly for players who are beginning out or want to try something at a lower cost before buying their dream guitar. Or maybe a backup you aren't worried about getting battle wounds or being stolen. For that market they are one of the better ones to have. Squires are the same thing for the Fender line. They do the basic job without that extra edge of quality you pay dearly for. If you are expecting the quality of a high end fender in a squire or Gibson in an Epiphone, you're deluding yourself into thinking they compare. I'm of course not knocking anyone's instrument, I'm just stating these are considered to be low end to mediocre market guitars at best with the exception of a few signature models released to improve the brand name standing in the market place. Also, a white G400 w/an added Maestro, a Korina 400, and a bolt on TV SG jr! I had an LP Special, but liked my cheapo $149 Austin version better, for reasons I can't really explain.
