Members bigboy78 Posted February 13, 2015 Members Posted February 13, 2015 My 8 year old has finally beating me into submission and I've agreed to let him become a drummer.......wondering if its worth buying a Junior Kit first up (used, $100) or if they're basically toys. If he sticks at it for the rest of the year I'm sure Santa could spring for a real kit.
Members Phil_The_Rodent Posted February 13, 2015 Members Posted February 13, 2015 Really depends on what you buy. There are some "Junior" sized kits out there that I would even consider buying for myself (eg. Yamaha Manu Katche Hipgig, Sonor Safari). I'd be really careful in this territory though, because I've seen very cheap kits that are not suitable for beginners at all. They can be terribly difficult to tune, hard to set-up ergonomically, can be possibly injurious and will carry no resale value. Used market is great; if you're careful to put in the required TLC, often you can turn something around years later for around the same market value, in which case you're really just "borrowing". "Junior" (small) sizes certainly don't mean toys though. Small sizes can sound great -- especially with shorter shells. On the ergonomics/injury thing, it's definitely also a worthwhile investment to get him into some classes when he starts -- 6 months or so to develop good habits and get the right sticks for him. Drums are a very physical activity and can injure you in the short term as well as in the long term if you're not doing things ergonomically (eg. repetitive stress injury on joints, lower back problems, etc.).
