Members Voltan Posted February 11, 2015 Members Posted February 11, 2015 just received a new remo 20" djembe. its a bass beast but still able to get some pretty high slaps considering... this is my first key tunable djembe as well as first with a synthetic head... a little more ring than a skin but i feel that adds to the palette... the overall build is quite nice and appears sturdy and smooooooth... new lugs are nicer than teh old stamped steel... i have two african djembes, one from guinea and one ivory coast as well as a couple X8's that are most likely from teh phillipines, and so far this compares very nicely and i think will be a welcome addition on stage...we'll find out this evening!
Members 1001gear Posted February 11, 2015 Members Posted February 11, 2015 Diameter? That's huge. That's a foot drum there. I like 'em 10" to 14" . Plastics alright. You can tune those to cut, save your fingers.
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted February 12, 2015 Members Posted February 12, 2015 Remo makes good stuff. I went to college with the guy who is the head of R&D there. He created most of the newer synthetic skins and all the shell material on those drums. Great drums.D
Members FitchFY Posted February 15, 2015 Members Posted February 15, 2015 I have a 16" Remo djembe I really like - as you said, great bass tones but can still cut.
Members Voltan Posted February 15, 2015 Author Members Posted February 15, 2015 Wow! Massive low end.... Just mic'd the top head and it worked flawlessly. I spent a little time yesterday finding the sweet spot for a Shure beta52 for teh bottom... I guess since the iPad now works on HC, I can do pics again... Shure drum mic clip on the top head with a Shure sm10 works rather well without being in the way... Dendy, pass on the appreciation if possible... I love skin heads and wooden drums, but this thing is impressive! Good overtones, nice and rich with excellent resonance... Has a good feel to the hands and I find the drum lends itself well to expressive playing... An added plus is the weather and humidity resistance... beach gigs and Floridian humidity in general can make skin heads labor intensive... I'm hooked on these remo djembes....
Members Voltan Posted February 15, 2015 Author Members Posted February 15, 2015 Fitch,1001, a friend has the remo 16" and 12"... I'm smitten...

Members Voltan Posted February 15, 2015 Author Members Posted February 15, 2015 I can definitely see a smaller one in the near future...
