Members FitchFY Posted January 9, 2015 Members Posted January 9, 2015 So my new band is gearing up to record what I'm guessing will be a bit of a polished demo kind of thing. I'm having a little push and pull with them about wanting to track individually, not as a live band. I addressed this in my latest blog: Little Red Recording Button, Part One My question to you guys is how do you prefer to record? Do you like just you and the click? Someone doing scratch tracks? Full band? Whatcha got?
Members rayboomboom Posted January 9, 2015 Members Posted January 9, 2015 I like to play along with others even if it's just for a scratch track. Easier to have the music in my ears than relying on my head. Clicks are fine, but not always necessary if everyone has good time. I think a better feel can be obtained if everyone is playing together.
Members Funkwave Posted January 12, 2015 Members Posted January 12, 2015 If a drummer is capable of playing to a click without loosing his feel, there's no reason why the drummer can't have a click in his ear and the band just follows the drummer. Did it many times.
Members Phil_The_Rodent Posted January 13, 2015 Members Posted January 13, 2015 I do best with no band, no click... provided I know the material and if free-form works. Sometimes it doesn't, and I'll solo a click or a double-time click depending on how the groove wants to work. Click is fine. I get along with it unless something is fighting in the scratch tracks... it's usually easy to identify. In this case, I like small guitars, loud-ish vocals, no bass. If keys carry chords, no guitars and small keys. I haven't done a LOT of group recording. I have done it, but it depends on the style, if all the mic bleeding works.
