How safe are these trade deals?

Generally you just send off your pedals at the same time using the agreed upon method of shipment. And obviously you only trade with people with a decent history around here with trade references. Don't ship your pedal to some noob that's been registered for a day and only has one post. And get a phone number as well...

Even on Ebay, despite their feedback system, you can get rooked. But most of my buying and selling experiences here have been excellent. (Not all are listed below.)

Be sure to get a valid street address and home phone number from sellers.

Most people here are conscientious.

Good Luck!

I've had 11 good transactions. I'm currently in the middle of a "bad" one. It's even the 2nd trade I've done with someone and I think I'm being dodged.

edit- Just make sure you check people's references and you should be fine.

You have to have faith with people. I guess it only goes so far though....because I have all the faith in the world in people and I believe I'm getting burned right now.

I am a noob and I've been interested in a few things on here so I've been thinking about this a bit. I think that the individual with the lesser 'reputation' should be on the hook for his part of the transaction first. I am trying to work a transaction for a chorus pedal right now, and i wouldn't expect the other person to send the pedal until he either has my money or my trade item.

And I also totally like the idea of getting a phone number and address if possible. I am so used to ebay that i hadn't thought of that part, but now i will make sure that i get a valid phone number before i do anything

I think that a good way to start off trading/selling is to find someone that has a good reputation and do a deal with them. If you are selling, ship the item first. When buyer gets the item, they send the funds. Or replace funds with trade item.

Chances are, if you pick someone solid to deal with, and the deal works as planned, they will be available as a reference. Just ask them when the deal is complete - "Can I use you as a reference?"...I think most people would be more than willing to supply the information that a good deal was done between you two.

It might even help to start off as a buyer. Use PayPal. Establish some credibility as a reliable buyer.

Give someone a link to your feedback page, if you have an eBay account.

I think that the bottom line is that you need to hang out for a bit, and see who does a lot of deals, and pay attention to see if any bad deals are reported. IF SOMEONE IS QUESTIONABLE ASK THEM FOR REFERENCES BEFORE YOU DEAL!!!

Good luck. I can still remember the first pedal I bought from someone on the forum. I even had to wait like 10 days before they shipped it. PAINFUL. Boss BF-2. Loved it. Just about a year ago. Since then, Ive done about between 50 and 75 deals.

1) Start with a small trade to get your courage up. :thu:

2) I wouldn't deal with anyone with less than 500 posts and one year membership here, minimum--unless they ship first. Tried and true members don't want a perma-ban over a $100 mix-up. :eekphil:

3) I never did the phone # thing, 'cause if the guy dodged me, I wouldn't make it worse by running up long-distance calls.

4) Fedex home delivery adds insurance and tracking # for you, the post office has you fill-out two slips: Delivery Confirm # and insurance amount. BUY THESE. If lost or damaged, your trade-buddy gets a govt. check, AND YOU KNOW IF YOUR STUFF GETS THERE, so no "I never got it man!" :cop:

Insist on the same from the other guy, so no "I sent it and now you won't pay me!"

Chin up, and good luck.

(BTW, can we get a sticky on this?)

Everyone's got some good advice here. I try and get a feel for who i'm working trades with. If they seem like honest, straight guys most of the time they are. But, be carefull for the guys on here that are full of themselves.....you'll know what I mean when you talk to these guys.

First a quick point about getting a phone number (more on this later): I use my cell phone for long distance, and I have sooooo many extra and accumulated minutes with my plan that it costs me nothing to call anywhere in the country.

Now as for the 500-post watershed: You must do what you think is right or prudent, of course, but in my view, dealing only with people who have 500 or more posts seems extreme to me.

I have but 41 posts (and counting) to my name here despite my 100% postive seller feedback on Ebay after over 400 deals. I am sure that there are a lot of good guys out there like, say, me -- who did a lot of business through Harmony-Central hardly ever, if ever, "posting." For years, I used only the Classified list to place ads here or respond to them, not the Forum classified format. I still prefer the former, but it seems that most of the action is here now. I don't linger on other HC forums. I have lot of other things to do and better venues for chatting about various issues. And I am not a dealer. I just like to try out varied gear from time to time. I see HC as a sort of like a swap club that should I occasion. Anyway, if you look, you will see that I am a long-time member of the club in good standing, despite my infrequent use of the forum format.

As another poster said above, you do well to feel out your potential partners in trade and try to get a sense of the sort of person you are going to deal with -- or not deal with. But I hesitate to place to much weight on those sorts of impressions because con-artists and other such paracites are out there, and any among us can be deceived by a really smoothly operating one.

Which brings me back to the point about getting a phone number.... The main reasons for getting an address and phone number are, first, that these are thing that you can verify, i.e., that you can use to see if you are dealing with a real person with a real home. Secondly, you can use the number to call and talk to the person -- before you send a trade or money -- and so get a better feel for him or her than you would get from a few email exchanges. And thirdly, after you've done your part of the deal, if the person turns out to be a deadbeat, you can use the phone number to embarrass annoy him or his wife or his girlfriend or his Mom until he makes good.

If a person refuses to or just does not send you a street address and phone number--well, wouldn't that alone tell you something? Is it not prudent to consult or create every indicator that one can?

True story: Once, when I did not get something for about a month, I called the number that I had prudently requested prior to the deal. The woman who answered asked me somewhat sternly who I was and exactly why I wanted to talk to her son. I related the circumstances to her, and she became ever so apologetic. (I got the impression that her son was a recovering drug addict living at home -- hence, perhaps, the careful call screening.) She promised he would send it out the next day, said she would make sure of it, put him on the phone, and so on. A few days later I had the pedal.

Simple as a phone call.

But you must do what you think is right or prudent, of course.

I'll have another suggestion in the next post.

You should also ask for pictures of the items. You can't take a photo of an imaginary item. After they have been sent, if they look generic, or if you are still a bit leery but feel compelled to try to make a deal nonetheless, ask for a picture from a particular angle or of a particular feature. Any will do. A good guy genuinely interested in selling and sympatheitic to your plight as a buyer/trader is more likely to accomodate you than a scammer. That has been my experience. Anyway, the more you can interact with the person, the more likely things will go well.

KEY: Street address, home phone number (land line, not a cell # !)

There are no guarantees.

so ive got a question, if you set up a trade with someone and they dont send you your pedal what happens then???

Contact them and ask why?

If the other person doesn't work with you, start a thread about that person {censored}ed you on on a deal.

But be careful...sometimes things happen to people, work or family emergencies.

I only deal with senior members.

Thanks to everyone who has posted here. I'm the new kid on the block and I am in negotiations with someone for a trade. I have 2 items they want and they have one I'd like. They offered to trade and send cash to make the deal more even. Sounds fair to me. How would I (as the new guy) go about completeing the transaction? What should I ask for in reference to shipping, etc.. Thanks Freedomrock for starting this! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just try and make the deal go as smooth as you can and you'll end up with a reference. the more items you buy sell successfully, people begin to notice your name and whether your a good/bad person to make deals with.
