It's my personal policy that if a guy is unwilling to give you a phone number, then there's no point in doing a deal with him. I mean the most meticulous scammers here at least use a burner phone and a fake address.

Hopefully you can get your money back (or the pedalboard)

I know this sounds a bit rediculous, but I think that this forum or some other, should charge a subscription fee. Then, they can gather everyones info when you register and CC information. I think it may be the only way to weed out the scamming teens. As for the scamming adults, perhaps having to pay a subcription fee would at least be a deterrent. I don't know fella's, I am growing quite weary of the entire issue. I have been scammed, several of those with whom I have delt well have been scammed...what can you do?

Dr. Scottie and I had spoken quite some time ago about establishing a core group of 20-25 people with whom we could trade/buy equipment. I now look at your number of posts and previous trades. If you have under 100 posts, I will look at the "Good Trade" posts to see if you are there. If not, I won't buy or trade. I will sell to anyone, because I know that I am honest, and will use paypal or certified funds.

Getting a phone number from a prospective trader/seller is a must for me. I will also Google Earth your address.

Thoughts?

Funny, that's what TGP does. I paid 10 bucks for a silver membership. They're very rigid about what can be sold on their forums anyway.

On this forum I would only trade with someone that is very well established. People {censored} around too much over here.

I paid the (I thought it was $12) for TGP to be able to post on their Emporiums, but since PayPal is supposed to be so secure, could you even get anyone's info that way anyways?

Good luck getting your stuff fellas.

This whole situation is a shame; I started coming on here about a month ago. I'm a married guy with three kids and love buying gear, but can't rationalize adding to the pile and was hoping to swap a couple of pieces to keep the cash outlay to a minimum while being able to try out different toys from time to time. No fricken way after (most noticeably) and the 1972 fiasco(s) and the Londonbus mess.

I agree with a lot of the posts that most people are honest and it's the few that ruin it all for the rest of us, but I'll be damned if I ship out my gear an lose it to some a-hole. Even if said a-hole has been a member for a while now. Is this the economy getting that bad that supposedly honest people would resort to ripping guys off for $1K or less?

By the way, I've done ebay and craigslist deals without any issues in the past because I've done the legwork by getting on the phone with these guys and worked out all the terms of the sales/trades and conditions of shipping. This rash of scams put enough doubt in my mind to stay on the sidelines....

Couldn't agree more. I have pretty much decided to hang on to all of the gear I wanted to part with before summer was over... maybe when the kiddies get back into school things will smooth back out.

What I'm curious about is this... Of all of the deals gone bad you hear about on here, how many more times have any of you spotted a scamer and broke off contact with them before any sort of deal (scam) took place?

With me, I'm batting 50%. Out of the last 6 deals I wanted to do on here, one failed miserably and two I KNEW were straight scams once communication (or lack of) started.

A 50% chance of a successful deal is obscenely bad odds. Yeah... sidelines for me too.

There a core bunch of guys I trust, some I've not done business with, like Dr Scottie, although we almost made a trade over on Jemsite a while back, and I know backer had been here a while, and I know dogbone and JonathanD, so if I get an ok from one of them as a reference I usually think it's ok, but I always make sure I get and test the phone number. Paypal is the safest, but accepting anything other than an echack is a loss of funds. I've been dealing on here and TGP, Jemsite, and Ebay for a long time, and hate to say it but this is the only place that I've ever had a few nervous moments waiting on gear and shipments. All have worked out, but if there's a delay when shipping something, you gotta tell the guy that's expecting the shipment. Hope everything works out for you, more than likely Joe just had something comeup, but he should keep in touch.
