sorry to say, it's not much of a player's guitar. it's sort of an "odd duck" as far as les pauls go. someone will buy it as a collectible, but it's doubtful many players would buy it to play, they are VERY heavy and have very unusual electronics.

but if some emo kid band starts playing one and gets big, maybe they will be worth more :thu:

It's unusual for sure which can be a bad thing when selling. Check out www.gbase.com and see if any of the dealers are selling one. That might get you a firm idea of the value/cost. You could also contact Elderly Music in Lansing Micigan. They have been around forever and have lots of old and different guitars hanging around. The could probably clue you in.

I thought Les had assumed room temperature...or ground temperature.

Anyway it's for sale.

Thanks

The 2008 Vintage Guitar Price Guide shows $1700-2200, but the market has softened since publication last fall. National dealers on GBase are in this same price range, but they usually negotiate off their listed prices.

A recent eBay sale only yielded $1274 for a natural finished model. I think the cream is a bit cooler and maybe worth more, but I think the eBay guitar was older.

This is a Les Paul, but to be honest, it does not sound like a Les Paul - at least what people think of as "that sound". That's why they have not increased in value at the same rate as the Standards and Customs.

BTW, Les is very much alive and playing gigs, even in his 90's!

I did not mean to start a rumor ...I hope Les still is among us. I can remember as a very young boy watching he and Mary Ford on TV playing duets together, she sang also. She was a great guitarist and quite a beauty too!

This is yellow not cream. From what I understand the ones like this with the 'current' position p/u selector are more valuable than the older ones with the selector on the pickguard...but I could be very wrong about that too.

Yes, the extra switch was the p/u selector that was on the pickguard area on the older ones up to mid 70's I believe. They are 'low impedance' pickups. :blah:

The VG Price Guide does not specify different price levels for the different knob placements.

About the finish color, it is very normal for the vintage cream/white finish to turn banana yellow. Looks like that's what happened with yours. I have had several guitars than turned with age, especially if they were exposed to UV light and the elements. I am not aware that Gibson offered a "yellow" color in the 70's, other than the special edition TV finish on a few Les Paul 55's, which is a translucent finish (you can see the grain of the wood through the finish).

If buyers are paying $2k-4K, then I imagine all of the guitars on gbase would be sold, since they are $1800-2200.

I understand the sentiment, but I am not sure I agree. If something is for sale, then it is only worth what the market is willing to pay - no more. If the seller feels it is worth more than prospective buyers, then he will naturally keep it.

Well, I was only asking $1650 shipped CONUS...thanks for all the info, so I guess it's 'yellowed', not yellow!
