Members TrashFace
any other synths that are cool like this one?
Members hyperstationjr
I would think you could get a lot done with a Kurzweil K2000r and a keyboard. The K2000r's are only like 200-350 depending (I got mine for like 300 w/ V3, and 16mb sampling), and are really great synths. You could probably get a lot of NIN-like stuff off of it, but it will take a lot of work. It's not an easy synth, but it's very powerful, samples, has a built in sequencer, and if you coupled it with another synth, a more "analog" one, or a VA, you would probably be able to get some really good sounds out of just that setup. The Korg MS2000 would be a good addition (as I just saw you were interested), I'd also say a Nord Micro Modular ($150-250) would be great, or any of the Nord Modulars you could afford. Only problem is it needs a computer editor to work with it, but it is a very powerful synth, and it's bigger brothers (just means more DSP for larger, more complex patches) was used on a LOT, if not most, of the Fragile. Again, the Kurzweil K2000 and a Nord Modular would be an impressive combo.
Members TrashFace
thanks anything else? I want some inexpensive hardware synths to add to the madness. I basically use Reason as a notepad or template for songs in my head. I want some hardware to make some of the sounds.
Members TDman
If you want to try vector synthesis (a la Prophet VS), you may want to consider a Yamaha TG-33. Granted, it's NOT a VS, but you'll get the flavor at roughly 1/10th of the price...
Members urbanscallywag
TG33 and an MS2000R would be a cheap way to get semi close to that sound. I like those ideas.

Members ShakaCthulu
As mentioned before, lots of Prophet VS on PHM, esp the digidude patch. Also Juno 106 (pizz patch on bridge in That's What I Get). It's not soley Emax on PHM. Don't even think the demos are Emax only. I've seen something on the net where he said he made it on Emax, a Mac, and a Minimoog, but recently in FM he said Linn9000, Oberheim Xpander, VS, Moog Prodigy, Emax, Mac+Performer. ??? Don't forget he also had access to whatever equipment his studio/collaborators had. You can hear the original PHM tracks on bootlegs like Remixes and Demos, Purest Feeling, etc, I highly suggest hunting one down. If I were TVT I would've sent him to Flood as well. Terrible autopanning on almost every track. Really bad, Ringfinger is the only track that sounds remotely similar to the album version. For some reason it bugs me when people blow this guy out of proportion...I mean, I love alot of his songs and he's def talented, but I don't think he does alot of the things he gets credited with. For VS type sounds without shelling out big $ for a VS, there are options. The Evolver supposedly has all the vS waveforms, never used one in depth though to crack those. I've gotten VS esque sounds out of the Ensoniq ESQ. Waldorf Microwave does a good job of it. Software wise there's that PPG synth, as well as Augur, latter of which is amazingly freeware. He gives all the credit to his engineers, he said he doesn't have an ear for that stuff.
Members sizzlemeister
Looks like time is clouding up the facts? I recall explicitly reading a bio on Trent that said PHM was made when he worked in a studio (bottom of the totem pole position) and he put it together after sessions and during dark times. I don't for the life of me remember an equipment list but the impression I had is that he did PHM all by his lonesome.
Members jjdugan3
He did the demo's in a studio he worked at in Cleveland, then he had a deal off the demos, shipped off to England with Flood and Adrian Sherwood who produced, worked with Trent on producing the album for TVT. Members ShakaCthulu
http://users.tkk.fi/~ajhuovil/vst.html You probably already know this but just in case, right click->copy the .dll file, then go to the plugin folder in your VST host (FL, Cubase, whatevah) and right click->paste it in there...then open vsts in the host and choose "refresh". The ppg vst was software offered by Waldorf before they folded. I'm sure you can find it somewhere, it's essentially abandon-ware.

It was me that was unsure. I've never heard a VS but I was so sure all of the "memorable" sounds from PHM were VS (well I never thought the choir was). That's a contrast from many interviews where he claims all that's used is an Emax. That's what brought doubt to my mind.

Members urbanscallywag
Or an Xpander. I guess the bottom line is that one's not impossible to create on many synthesizers.
Members TrashFace
I made this thread cause I thought trent made the album with hardly anything, but I guess he made the demos with hardly anything. I will have to ask him.
