Members msalamander Posted January 13, 2003 Members Posted January 13, 2003 I feel dumb asking this but I've started relearning theory(i can read music pretty well but never really learned theory) and something really basic has me stuck. Ok I know how the basi scales are spelled, for example major wwhwwwh but what gets me is that when harmonizing a C scale with 3rds like this Ok so the C is pretty basic. The third of C is E right? I get messed up when doing the same thing to the A scale. Heres my question. Whats the 3rd of A? Does the half step between B and C(and E and F) affect the note? Is the 3rd C or C#? Like I said, really basic but I'm stumped and havent found the answer anywhere. Very
Members WattsUrizen Posted January 13, 2003 Members Posted January 13, 2003 I assume you mean the A major scale. To answer your question, the C should be C#. To see this, transpose down the C major scale to A major: Every note should go down three semitones. Do the same again for the harmonised part above the C major scale, again, every note should go down three semitones. Also, you know that the pattern for a major scale is WWHWWWH, so if you start on A, then the third note must be C#.
Members Fred5 Posted January 13, 2003 Members Posted January 13, 2003 What Andoman says, C#. WW = two whole steps as in any major key. The major third. C#.

Members Flanger Posted January 14, 2003 Members Posted January 14, 2003 Hey, check out the circle of fifths. It's a good reference to the sharps and flats in all the keys. It's something I often use to work things out in my head if I don't have them memorized.
Members 335clone Posted January 15, 2003 Members Posted January 15, 2003 The formating of this got messed up, but here is the root, 2,3,4,5,6,7,octave for each key starting at A thru G# A B C# D E F# G# AA# C D D# F G A A#B C# D# E F# G# A# BC D E F G A B CC# D# F F# G# A# C C#D E F# G A B C# DD# F G G# A# C D D#E F# G# A B C# D# EF G A A# C D E FF# G# A# B C# D# F F#G A B C D E F# GG# A# C C# D# F G G#
