Members thamiam Posted January 8, 2003 Members Posted January 8, 2003 Can you sing a major scale? Try it right now. Don't pick up an instrument, don't do anything, just sing a major scale. Did you get it right? (Check yourself with an instrument). If not, drop everything and learn it. Do not practice anything else until you get that sound locked in your head. Be able to sing it anytime, at the drop of a hat. The major scale is the root of all western music, and knowing the sound of the scale (as opposed to knowing how to play it) is the first step towards a complete musical understanding.
Members Russ T Nail Posted January 9, 2003 Members Posted January 9, 2003 Hi ThamAh, the good old Do-Re-Me scale or the Julie Andrews scale as Steve Vai calls it. IMHO, this should be the first scale you learn. It is easy to omit the 4th and 7th from it to get your pentatonic, it's a different ball game going the other way. Also it provides a good baseline to get your head around derived modes. I love it, if I'm looking for that something to bring a bit more melody to a Major key solo, it's a great place to start, I can't understand why it's so unfashionable.Perhaps we should always refer to it as the Ionian mode to start a revival Russ T
