I believe what he means by "the spider" is excercise #1. I agree. This has become my main left hander. There are lots of things to be aware of when doing this and Troy goes into a few of them, but I'll add a thing or two.

When using your outside fingers (1st and 4th), there is often a tendency to lean your hand into the motion. Don't do this. You want your fingers doing the work. If you lean toward your index finger, your pinky will have a harder time and vice versa. Always keep your hand steady and balanced.

I like to think of the fretboard as a big, sticky piece of flypaper when doing this one. When pulling on finger off, you have to brace it with the next finger to come down.

And of course, do it slow! Find a speed that's comfortable and then knock off twenty or thirty bpm. Before you can speed up, you have to really meditate on getting the form perfect. There are many little tweaks and corrections in your form that you can only at slow speed. As the proper form gets into your muscles, the akwardness goes away and you can start edging up the metronome.

I also found trills (especially ex #8) very helpful
