Members hybrid Posted March 29, 2003 Members Posted March 29, 2003 I bought a cheap mini fake book today...just wondering, some of them have "moderato" or "slow" etc as the instruction....do I still play them swing even if it's not written? (If the answer is I can do whatever I want, then what's the conventional way?) Also, what is the approach to being able to improvise over a standard? Learn teh melody? chords?? Thanks a lot.
Members lazaraga Posted March 29, 2003 Members Posted March 29, 2003 basically you do whatever you want. most standards are played with swing feel regardless of tempo. improvise however you want. probably the most useful way to approach improvisation is to start with the melody. use chord tones and scale degrees to embellish on the melody. good luck! peace
