well normally i like alot of tool, deftones, and at the drive in, but i heard some dream theater the other day and decided thats some incredible playing. i would like to get as fast as him. I realize they aren't the most technical bands. I like to look outside the box :)

Speed mechanics for lead guitar (book) would be a good place to start :) Ive been working through it for less than a couple of weeks and i can already see a difference. After that maybe john petruccis rock discipline for some ideas of what he does with dream theater

Chromatic exercises are good for developing speed and technique. Keep it simple at first and then start developing more complicated patterns.

And two books - Wild Stringdom and Rock Discipline. I have both and they are both good. You'll need some DT CDs to get some of his examples. I also bought Troy Stetina's Speed mechanics. it too looks like a good book.

Excercises are great, and I think I have all the books/videos mentioned here except for wild stringdom. But I think the single most important thing in developing chops is focus. When you practice, turn off the tv and really try to get deeply into what your doing. Constantly analyze and correct your movements so that the right motions get ingrained, not the wrong ones. Slop is always at the door looking to creep into your fingers, so you gotta keep a look out!
