little chord shapes

This is not exactly rocket science, but I figured I would throw this out there for anyone experimenting with chord textures (or maybe to inspire someone to start experimenting). I'm very fond of using very thin chords consisting of usually 3 notes ... these sound great with a nice tube overdrive but I have actually never heard other players use them (well maybe john frusciante). I'm just removing the 'excess' notes in some common chord shapes to create a more hollow sound. I love huge sounds (I listen to lots of shoegazer if any of you guys are familiar) but I like to try to imply huge sounds rather than force a big muddy chord down the listeners throat. Anyway you can get a lot of mileage out of these little sounds:

major: (before and after)

e----------

b--7----7--

g--7----x--

d--7----7--

a--5----5--

e----------

minor:

e----------

b--6----6--

g--7----x--

d--7----7--

a--5----5--

e----------

maj7: (our third goes away, but no problem, let the vocalist fill in the third or just leave it out)

e----------

b--7-------

g--6----6--

d--7----7--

a--5----5--

e----------

dom7: (I never actually play this one, but just to be thorough ..)

e----------

b--7-------

g--5----5--

d--7----7--

a--5----5--

e----------

You can also remove the 5th instead of the doubled root, although you don't really technically have a chord anymore, you have a third with an octave:

major

e----------

b--7----7--

g--7----7--

d--7----x--

a--5----5--

e----------

major chopped down to an octave (just to put things in perspective)

e----------

b--7-------

g--7----7--

d--7----x--

a--5----5--

e----------

these chords can also be mixed into progressions with 3 note power chords, octaves, double/triple stops, muted string rhythms, etc ...

If anyone else knows non-jazz chord voicings that have an interesting texture please post em.

Here's one I use - works well for distortion, this would be used in place of an A Barre chord:

E------------------------------
B------------------------------
G---6-------------------------
D---5-------------------------
A---X--------------------------
E---5---------------------------
