triads

Well I'm learning some theory and I'm stuck. I'm trying to play chords other than the R5R way on three adjacent string...i.e. powerchords on all the strings not just the 6-4 so i decided to work on triads... but i have one problem... they sound really horrible...

for example when I play a progression in E...lets say I'm playing E F#m A B

I have the option of playing the R and 5th's but that sounds boring I can spice it up by playin like Dave Matthew in Crash the E like this

e|-----

b|-5--

g|-4--

d|-2--

a|-----

e|-----

and switching only the bass note...keep the continuity nice..but still overdone...

I also tried doing 2 string intervals using the R and the 3rd but that sounds really bad...

E F#m A B

e|---4---5-----10----12---------------------

B|---5---7------9-----11-----------------------

Any other ways to play this progression ...spice it up?

That may sound stupid, but did you played the triads with distortion? If you they will sound horrible.

Otherwise if you think the sound of pure major and minor triads is to usual throw in some sus2 or sus4 chords instead.

You might also try out some piano-style voicings:

A-minor

-----------

-----------

--2--------

--3--------

--5--------

A-major

-----------

-----------

--2--------

--4--------

--5--------

They are a bit odd to play 'cause the root is the "rightmost" note, but they sound nice.

Not if done right. Eric Johnson plays them with distortion, but he plays the 3rd an octave higher to solve the problem.
