Members thamiam Posted December 7, 2003 Members Posted December 7, 2003 So, we know there are a million possibilities for substituting for the V7 in a ii-V-I. But what can you suggest for substituting for the ii? What are your favorites? Can you illustrate with some examples from specific songs or recordings? I'd love to hear theory and opinions on this.
Members Phil Donahue Posted December 8, 2003 Members Posted December 8, 2003 You could toss in a IVmaj7, a bVI7, or a vi7. Or you could get really messed up and pull a Coltrane cycle sub like bVmaj7 or b7maj7 (or is that Parker cycle). I like to use the IVmaj7 and the bVI7 in this spot, personally.
Members keyplyr Posted December 8, 2003 Members Posted December 8, 2003 ...what can you suggest for substituting for the ii? Just as you can use a tritone substitution for the V, you can also use it for the ii: Dm7 - G7 - C would be: Ab7 - G7 - C or even tritone both: Ab7 - Db7 - C and of course 'alter' to taste!
