Members gregab25 Posted January 18, 2004 Members Posted January 18, 2004 X123XT Any tips in general on fretting this chord with thumb? Im i big guy my hands should be able to do this but its extremely difficult. I can do it without the ring finger but once i add the ring finger its very hard. My thumb joint starts hurting when i try to practice this as well from the pressure im using to bend my thumb. Thanks
Members patd Posted January 18, 2004 Members Posted January 18, 2004 You don't mention what fret you're thumb is supposed to be.If it should be at the third fret, I don't see any reason why you should be using your thumb. On frets 1&2 it should be rather easy to use your thumb for this one. If you experience any troubles with that I suggest you to work on some exercises for gaining strenght and stretch in your fingers. There's a great one in Petrucci's rock discipline. He calls it a warm-up exercise but for me it worked great to improve finger strength and independence. After doing this for a while it became much easier to fret a lot of chord shapes that I had problems with before.
Members gregab25 Posted January 18, 2004 Author Members Posted January 18, 2004 Sorry the "T" plays the same fret as the 1st finger. Like an A Major would be X 5 6 7 X 5 Thanks for your reply. Ill check the Petruccis rock discipline you mentioned. Im really frustrated with this and my thumb joint is throbbing.

Why do you even need your thumb? that chord shape can be done with the index on the low a, pinky on the octave a, ring finger on the b and middle fingeron the d. In fact, that shape is just a broken up barre chord. The only reaso9n to play it with your thumb would be to have your pinky left to add extensions.
Members blackrose Posted January 20, 2004 Members Posted January 20, 2004 You could also just mute the A string with your ring finger.
Members CrutcH Posted January 24, 2004 Members Posted January 24, 2004 Like Masque said, it's a barre chord. Use your index for the root, pinky for the octave, ring for the Db and middle for the E. Keep yer thumb on the bakk ov zee nekk!!
