The guitar is a musical instrument. Anything you learn in a theory book or in a class, you should be able to learn to play on the guitar. If you're working from a theory book that has written examples, try to play each example on the guitar.

In short, learn your scales and mode, learn your chords and chord progressions. Then practice by creating new songs, learning other people music, and then practice improvising over any progression you hear. Learn how to apply the theory to the guitar, not just understanding the concepts on paper.
Any message I could write here would be to short. Check out my webpage it's designed to help people do just what you are asking about.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Hi, I think I know what you mean. When I was a kid, my folks bought me one of those cheap electric chord organs that were big in the 70's. I learned music on a keyboard, where you have the nice linear structure and can easily see at a glance which keys have sharps and how to make a basic major chord.

Are you wondering how to take C - E - G notes to make a C major on the guitar?

Learn where hte notes are. Learn that chord tones are taken from the scales. Learn the relation between modes and chords (as in, this mode creates this chord from this formula). Learn the relation of the 1,3, and 5 intevals. Learn that not all intervals are perfect. Then learn the fruits of substitution and modal playing.

There's a great book called Harmony for Guitar by Lance Bosman. It presents theory as it has evolved over time, but always relates it to the guitar and gives examples.
