Members Shaolin_sword36 Posted February 22, 2004 Members Posted February 22, 2004 How does he do it??
Members CrownOfThorns Posted February 22, 2004 Members Posted February 22, 2004 i think he said by fretting with this fingernail instead of his fingertips?
Members Deek Posted February 22, 2004 Members Posted February 22, 2004 Pinch Harmonics. You play the note with your pick and directly after, your thumb holding the pick just brushes the string. It's hard to explain without pictures or anything.
Members Redsweater Posted February 22, 2004 Members Posted February 22, 2004 remeber, its technique not gain!
Members Shaolin_sword36 Posted February 22, 2004 Author Members Posted February 22, 2004 its in a guitar.com lesson....but the video is grainy and the audio isnt great.... And I still can't get a good pinch harmonic.
Members Flanger Posted February 22, 2004 Members Posted February 22, 2004 Originally posted by hampy I know he uses pinch harmonics, but i think he does them in a special way. I'm not excusing bad technique, but gain and humbuckers go a long way towards getting those kinda sounds. And lots of practice! ATTACK the string with your pick. I rotate it so it's almost perpendicular to the string and dig in hard. Then either do a full step bend or some super wide vibratto. I can get Zakk-style squeals on the low E with my stock stratocaster (yes, single coil pickups) through a cranked non-master volume amp.

Members c_fosco Posted February 23, 2004 Members Posted February 23, 2004 I always thought it was those pickups he used... Is it just me who finds those squeals annoying as hell?
Members edeltorus Posted February 23, 2004 Members Posted February 23, 2004 It's easier to get those squeals with a hot humbucker and a cranked amp. Also some guitars like pinch harmonics more than others. But I can play them as well with my strat and a clean practice amp. Guess that's the worst setup pinch-harmonics, but it works. btw, I can't stand them either.. for whatever reason I've practiced pinch harmonics, but I've *never* played them outside my bedroom).

And lots of practice! This is not true. I can play them on my acoustic guitar all day long. And when electric Single coils make them more audible.
Members MorePaul Posted February 23, 2004 Members Posted February 23, 2004 How do you squeal like Zakk Wylde? You have to go on a bow-hunting/conoe trip!!
