Members Syko Posted March 24, 2004 Members Posted March 24, 2004 What do you do for the fast palm muted stuff? Is it even possible to do it all with downstrokes, or do you use alternate picking? I can't get it to sound very crunchy or good at all on upstrokes. Any ideas? Or should I just practice my ass off... Alternate picking seems to work ok with stuff like Metallica's One (near the end, where the guitar is really fast and muted for a lot of it) because it's only on the single E string. But stuff like Jimmy Eat World's The Middle doesn't work out so well alternate since it's 2 strings and sounds bad...

When playing 2-strings at once, it's not possible to get them to sound the same as downstrokes (unless you reverse your strings), but work on making them sound as good as possible. Then, switch to all downstrokes and see if you notice a difference in your execution.
Members The*Ataris Posted March 27, 2004 Members Posted March 27, 2004 "The middle" is pretty slow to even be *thinking* of alternate picking. I think you need to practice your speed and rhythm with your downpicking more than anything. Just keeping playing along to songs...it's the best way. And for alternate picking and not getting the upstrokes to sound right: it's the same thing. You need to be getting the hang of the rhythm and keep time with it. It all comes naturally...
