Members Jules Posted April 5, 2004 Members Posted April 5, 2004 I have been learning this song over the last few days based on tab I found from powertab.net. I find it to be a very good song for an intermediate to learn. There are slower parts which allow you to concentrate on playing each note accurately and with feeling, there are some quick runs, but nothing too terribly challenging, it utilizes some different fingerings as opposed to the typical scales we all know, there are some basic bends in it and some challenging pullofs. Right now I'm stuck on the nasty pulloffs 13 13p-12p-10 which changes patterns to 12h13p12p10 and makes a great exercise for getting your pinky to move independent of your ring finger (something I am finding very difficult at the moment). Anyways, thought I would mention it in case anyone else is interested.
Members IanHey Posted April 7, 2004 Members Posted April 7, 2004 I learned that piece 25 years ago .... I must be getting a bit long in the tooth. It's a great piece, I used to love playing it. It used to go down really well no matter where I played it .... if it was a young crowd ... I'd crank it up, if it was am old crowd ... I tone it down. I hope you're listening to the recording ... I can't imagine the tab will quite capture the nuance of it .... some of the little bends, flicks and slides are great. The left hand trem is important ... to give it feeling, contrast and motion. It's mostly subtle, sometimes very slow, sometimes a little faster and sometimes virtually none. I used to practice bends, pulls off and hammers up and down the neck ... until they felt really comfortable no matter what I was playing. Carlos Santana has alot of great stuff to study ... Europa and Samba Pa Ti to name a couple.

I'm going to learn the basic song from tab, then really concentrate on the recording to get it down just right, the tab is very good, but can't capture the subtleties. I really need to practice those pull offs, I have some exercises I found that I have been playing and I have noticed improvement in my playing, but I really just need to do those pull offs all over the neck. I'd love to learn samba pa ti, but its a little over my head right now, I got the beginning down, but the fast stuff that comes on at around the 3 1/2 minute mark kills me. Once I master moonflower, that's the next one I'm going to learn, then oye como va and black magic woman.
