Members guitguy26 Posted May 30, 2004 Members Posted May 30, 2004 I've been getting into Django's music lately, and I would like to know what sort of chord forms he uses, for example on a tune like Minor Swing. Can anyone demonstrate the type of chord shapes he would commonly use? I have a short article about it in a Guitar Player but the chord shapes they provide don't sound quite right.

Poparad Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Well, seeing as how Django only had two functional fingers, he couldn't play almost all of those chords. Django was pretty much exclusively a single note soloist, a great one at that, but he didn't play chords. He had three guitarists behind him comping very basic 7th chord voicings while he and Stephane Grapelli took solos.

On the versions I have he only seems to use chords in a few places - on the chart attached above bars 9-12 and 17-16 and then a bit at the end. The comping behind him was often by brother Joseph.
Members Paul J. Edwards Posted June 2, 2004 Members Posted June 2, 2004 There is a great Django lesson in a Guitar Player mag written by John Jorgenson of the Hellcasters fame. He disects Django's style and his chord forms used. For the most part he uses the 3rd and 7th of each chord along with it's root. That is all you need to imply the chord and it so friggin' cool. Just 3 notes. Check it out on on the GP site. If you can't find it let me know. I may be able to send it to you if you are truly interested in exploring the genius of Django. His solo's uses a lot of diminshid {censored} which goes along with his succicnt style.Django Rocks!!!!

Members Paul J. Edwards Posted June 3, 2004 Members Posted June 3, 2004 I am going to throw this laptop out the friggin'n window. This is the second time I wrote this and this piece of {censored} PC deletes what I write just when I am ready to send it. Arghhhh! In any case I will find the issue in Guitar Player that it appeared in and will p0ost it here ASAP. It should be available on the www.guitarplayer.com site but still I will try to post a link here. It is the best explaination of Django's harmonic concept and the easieast way to understand what he was doing. Jon Jorgenson of the Hellcasters wrote it.
