Could someone explain Larry Carlton's super-triad theory?

Im not sure exactly what you're referring to, but i've read some interviews with Carlton and a major premise of his technique is to play differing arpeggios and chords over the implied harmony.

 

example Over a E Major chord, he would play A7, A C# E G, to imply an overall harmony of E#9,13.
