Members Lee33 Posted August 16, 2004 Members Posted August 16, 2004 I really must improve my rythmn playing and I wondered if anyone has ever given a link or whatever to the basic jazz chords that you just couldn't live without. You know the small compact type that you can slide all over the fretboard. Chords that sound 'nice' but aren't too big and cumbersome. Anyone know of such a list? Lee
Members mukuzi Posted August 16, 2004 Members Posted August 16, 2004 rootless voicings sound best think 3 7 9, 3 7 6 or 7 3 9 , 7 3 6 or forth voicings 9 5 R, #11 M7 3, b7 #9 #5 (b7 b3 m6)

I've jammed along to my recent Allman Brothers DVD and got along fine with basic triads on the top 3 or 4 strings.

These voicings can be slid anywhere on the neck for different roots. You will notice that they don't include the root on the bottom strings, and sometimes omit the 5th. BbMaj7 6677xx Bb13 8876xx Bbm7 6666xx EbMaj7 6878xx Eb9 6665xx Ebm9 6664xx

You will notice that they don't include the root on the bottom strings, and sometimes omit the 5th.BbMaj7 6677xx This particular one sounds pretty harsh because of the minor 9th interval between the Root on the first string and the 7th on the 4th string. The way to avoid this is to either change the root, or change the 7th. Moving the 7th, you can use Bb 6/9: 6 R6 55 95 6xx Or Bbmaj6: 6 R6 57 35 6xx Moving the root, you can use Bbmaj9: 8 96 57 37 7xx However, if you take the original voicing and move the top note down to the bottom string, you get a very common and usable Bbmaj7 shape: x677x6 In fact, you can do that to all the voicings in the above post for some voicings with the root on the bottom string. Also, there was a guitar magazine with a good section on common jazz voicings that I picked up a few years ago when I was first learning jazz. Here is the section on chords: http://gozips.uakron.edu/~jjp14/Chords1.jpghttp://gozips.uakron.edu/~jjp14/Chords2.jpghttp://gozips.uakron.edu/~jjp14/Chords3.jpghttp://gozips.uakron.edu/~jjp14/Chords4.jpghttp://gozips.uakron.edu/~jjp14/Chords5.jpg

Members Lee33 Posted August 22, 2004 Author Members Posted August 22, 2004 Jazz is my favourite genre. What's the problem? I'm pretty poor at theory - which is why I'm here. I hope to improve outa sight.
