Members Jerry NT Posted August 24, 2004 Members Posted August 24, 2004 Don't know why, but I was looking at Guitar Jam for too long. I guess so many kids are on the site thinking that some guitarist is the greatest because he is the fastest. If you play the same thing over and over and over you can do it faster and faster and faster. It doesn't mean that you're good. Not that being fast is bad. And doing something over and over is called practice. And I like to show off with speed every once and awhile. But where is the nuance, where is the variety?Learning many different songs and many different styles is also difficult. Playing chords instead of scale after scale can be difficult. But more importantly, it sounds better if you add variety. Your music is better.

Members bierball Posted August 26, 2004 Members Posted August 26, 2004 Exactly, but being fast doesn't mean you lack feeling either.

It's says so in my thesaurus True, and slow doesn't mean good either. But TOO fast can mean that there is no room for expression or improvisation. In fact, a medium paced song (or even a slow song) can have super fast scales and arpeggios thrown in just the right places.I have heard super fast songs that actually seem to have lost the melody.

Members Bajazz Posted August 26, 2004 Members Posted August 26, 2004 Listen to the intro of "Though boy" by ZZ Top. Think it's a good example.
