Are CD/DVD lessons a good substitute?

Not having time for regularly scheduled private lessons, do those of you who have used CD/DVD instruction consider them a viable alternative to private lessons? I get the Homespun catalog and have ordered one DVD, but it was more advanced for my skill level. It was also a little unorganized, although very enjoyable to watch. Are there any good recommendations for instruction companies?

I use a lot of book/CD packages - I think they're great. They tend to have a lot more information than DVD's. It really depends on what style of music you're into. For heavy metal and rock, Troy Stetina has some good stuff http://www.stetina.com/ For blues, I like the Blues You Can Use series by John Ganapes. Just type his name into Amazon.com if you're interested. Both are published by Hal Leonard.

I agree with Little Dreamer. I also like book/cd's better than dvd's, and I like his suggestions.

But keep in mind that there are limitations to instructional material. If you find something that you just can't learn on your own, then find a good teacher. Even if just to learn the one thing---then get back to the self learning if your schedule is tight.
