Members twang55 Posted September 25, 2004 Members Posted September 25, 2004 Not having time for regularly scheduled private lessons, do those of you who have used CD/DVD instruction consider them a viable alternative to private lessons? I get the Homespun catalog and have ordered one DVD, but it was more advanced for my skill level. It was also a little unorganized, although very enjoyable to watch. Are there any good recommendations for instruction companies?
Members Little Dreamer Posted September 25, 2004 Members Posted September 25, 2004 I use a lot of book/CD packages - I think they're great. They tend to have a lot more information than DVD's. It really depends on what style of music you're into. For heavy metal and rock, Troy Stetina has some good stuff http://www.stetina.com/ For blues, I like the Blues You Can Use series by John Ganapes. Just type his name into Amazon.com if you're interested. Both are published by Hal Leonard.
Members slindsey Posted September 27, 2004 Members Posted September 27, 2004 I agree with Little Dreamer. I also like book/cd's better than dvd's, and I like his suggestions. But keep in mind that there are limitations to instructional material. If you find something that you just can't learn on your own, then find a good teacher. Even if just to learn the one thing---then get back to the self learning if your schedule is tight.
