So I went a got a little Boss drum machine to practice to..

This sounds dumb.. but errr. how do you play to a beat?

Let me explain.. I get some punk type chords together I doodle around and find a funkin rythm.. Then I turn on the beatbox to play along with.. I can't match my playing to a beat.. I don't know what the hell im doing.. slow speeds are ok, but faster speeds.. im lost completely..

Its like I'm trying to get the box to match me cos I can't match my rythm to the box.. damn stoopid drummers!

Advice here?

I do not know which level of skill you are playing when it comes to rhythm but here's the approach that I do with when it comes to practicing rhythm.

Starting off, with simple time signatures, and moving on to more complex time signatures.

Starting off with simple strumming, like one strum per beat, to multiple strummings per beat.

It takes time to practice and develop.

Pick up pieces that have notations in them to direct you on how exactly to play notes and chords according to timing, and everything. Classical pieces is one of them.

I depended on notation to practice my rhythm, and to more complex rhythm nowadays, I would just use my hearing to follow the rhythm but some people would still use the notation as a base to help them play the complex rhythms.

To build on rhythm, firstly get yourself a metronome, and practice playing whatever with that metronome. (generally it's one click of a sound, per beat- start with this one first it goes a long way)

When your rhythm is strong enough, you could play to whatever rhythm other people is producing.
