Members WinDC Posted December 22, 2004 Members Posted December 22, 2004 My daughter is learning to play by tabs, I thought it might be a cool Christmas present if I could find software that sonverted sheet music to tabs. Is there such a thing? If so which seems to work the best? Where can I find it?
Poparad Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 The only thing I can think of would be Finale, the popular music notation program. You can take music from a staff and drag it down onto a tab staff, but it's not perfect. You have to tell it what the lowest fret range is, and you often get really screwy fingerings. There's a built in feature where you can scan music into the computer and Finale will convert it from the image, so you don't have to manually type it in, but again, it's not perfect, and gets confused often. Also, Finale is a bit of a difficult program to learn. It's taken me a couple years of use to get comfortable with it. Also, if the music you are using isn't for guitar (like piano music) it might be somewhat impossible to play as is on guitar, tab or not. A good musician who knows guitar can make alterations to make it fit. A good teacher could help your daughter convert the music to tab, or even just teach her to read it as is in standard notation. So as far as software goes, Finale is your best bet, but you kind of have to know what you're doing to convert it and make it work.
