pentatonic fingering question

I am starting to learn the pentatonic scales and have a question about fingering them.

If you were playing the pentatonic minor A and after playing in the box that starts at the 5th fret you moved to the next box at the 7th fret, would you use your middle and pinkie, or index and ring on the E,B and E strings?

Using the same scale - how about the box that you would play on the 3rd fret. which combination would youuse on the ds and g strings?

Thanks for all the ehlp and I apologize profusely for the terrible description. I hope it made some sense...

Thanks,

Zach

I tend to use my index and ring exclusively when playing a single box. However, I rarely play a single box and often stretch across two, using my index, ring and pinky.

It's just your own preference, when it comes down to it, so just find something comfortable for yourself.

When I was first learning the shapes and just playing them up and down I would use middle and pinkie in the 7th fret situation and index and pinkie in the 3rd fret situation you mention. IMO I think it helps develop coordination and pinkie strength. However in 'musical situations' (meaning I'm actually playing music and not just playing scales) I usually use the index and ring, especially on the 7th fret example you mention. But it's going to depend on what my fingers were just doing and where they are going afterward. So there is really no 'set' way for me.

When I've learned to play a-minor pentationic in the second position I played the top three strings exclusively for a long time. I fretted the g-string with the middle, and played the b/e with the index and ring-finger.

btw..

If you want to move from the first to the second position, try sliding up two frets with you middle on the g-string, seventh fret.

You'll end up exactly at the second position as show in the image above. You can slide another two frets to the third position. The middle-finger on the g-string works great as an anchor when changing positions.
