Members speddingfan Posted January 17, 2005 Members Posted January 17, 2005 Would like to hear input from folks who have plunked down the 26.95 on this book. Everything the website claims it is? (I assume one must do the work and all...) -- anyone here have a breakthrough with this book? Seems like it makes sense (from the teasers provided on the site). Just wondered if there's enough practical stuff in it to balance the thinkology... I have no problem plopping 26.95 -- for something truly good & different. Thanks in advance for any feedback...
Members Auggie Doggie Posted January 17, 2005 Members Posted January 17, 2005 It's a great book, especially for guitarists with little or no formal musical training who may have a hard time grasping the concept of 'practice', but it's still useful for those who do have a solid background. The book's strengths are its concepts; its weakness is the (general lack of) material. Because of this, it's more of a companion book--you apply the Principles to whatever you might be working on. (It's not really a weakness, per se, it's just the way the book was intended in the first place.) It's not a stand-alone book. I don't agree with everything in it, but the pros outweigh the cons, and I recommend it to people all the time. Hell, I have a link to it in my signature! I think of it as an investment; if you apply what that book says to what you're practicing, you'll save hundreds (if not thousands) of wasted hours.

Members NewSc2 Posted January 17, 2005 Members Posted January 17, 2005 That was one of the first guitar books I read, and it certainly made a difference for me. I started playing guitar after a brief hiatus of about a decade of piano lessons, and a lot of the facets of Jamey's book allowed me to reflect on how I learned the piano and apply it to the guitar. Basically the issues about having technique and feeling the music in your fingers, and how to practice really resonated with me. I don't play classical guitar, so a good portion of the classical stance wasn't particularily useful for me, but the first 20-30 pages of the book were a good read.

They open but the page is blank. I've downloaded the PDFs to my machine and tried to open from my hard drive but I'm still having problems. Anyone have any ideas? I'm an old guy (44) that's had to give up keyboards because of problems with my right hand. I can hold a pick but that's about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ThanksDennis
