Members Angus_Poser Posted April 18, 2005 Members Posted April 18, 2005 I want to be a great Rhythm player in many styles. blues, rock, and metal are my biggest genres. What steps should I take?
Members edeltorus Posted April 18, 2005 Members Posted April 18, 2005 First a question: On which level are you? You're still lerning the basics, or are you already able to rock some songs? A big part of a good rhythm is to play tight. That's something you can learn on your own (get a drum computer or some drumloops to get started). Take a some songs and learn the rhythm part inside out. However, you can play the greatest rhythm-guitar for yourself, but it will still sound kinda thin compared to a band. As a bedroom warrior I tried to compensate that by even playing more and frenzier, but that's the wrong way. It turned out that it was much easier for me to play rhythm with a band. You don't have to play all the music on your own and you can rely on the drums+bass to do the groove. The simpler and straighter I played, the better the music was, and it was a lot simpler to play too. Try to find some folks to play with. Guitar players that want to play a solid rhytm instead of playing solo all the time are usually welcomed in bands and jams. Nils
Members Angus_Poser Posted April 18, 2005 Author Members Posted April 18, 2005 I've been playing for a little over a year, I can play parts from a few songs, but not very fluently
Members cynicalphish Posted April 18, 2005 Members Posted April 18, 2005 Start playing along with songs on cds or whatever you like. Play slow at first until you have the song memorized, then pick up speed, find more complicated songs, and repeat.
Members edeltorus Posted April 18, 2005 Members Posted April 18, 2005 Hm.. The Personal Jesus cover from Johnny Cash just came to my mind. It's very easy to play along with it, since the Cash version is kinda slow. Once you're firm with that you could play along to the Marilyn Manson version and rock it a bit harder. Same chords, almost the same rhytm. Also it's a good song to play.
Members CyanJaguar Posted April 19, 2005 Members Posted April 19, 2005 I'll tell you what I spent $20 learning. start tapping your foot to the music. It will improve your tightness.
Members flip333 Posted April 22, 2005 Members Posted April 22, 2005 I have been getting the harmony riff interactive sent to me daily by email... it is the best teaching tool I have learned by. I am sold on it. I am going to buy the CD bundles that suit me.
