Blues "major" scale

Hello all,

I don't really play a lot of blues, but any time I get into the pentatonic scale it always sounds "minor" .. like a sad, mello kind of vibe.

Is there a major blues scale? I know the c-major scale is linked to the a-minor (pentatonic/blues) scale, but I want somethng that gives that upbeat, exciting sound.

Any suggestions?

If the chords are all dominant, you can use lydian dominant scales over them instead of minor pentatonic scales AFAIK, I learned that not long ago while reading a different thread. I don't know any tricks if the harmony is minor.

Cheers,

Alex

Go here...

tutorial

I explain using the major and minor pentatonic scales together to mix and macth the two sounds over blues, jazz, country, etc... It almost gives you a chromatic scale. Look through that link, there are links to 35 lessons found throughout it.

Have fun!

If you listen to most of the blues great you'll hear that they actually use more than just he minor pentatonic. Basically what you'll hear is the minor pentatonic, with the b5 added and then the major 3rd, the 6th and the 9th as color tones depnding on the chords (major 3rd and the 9th sound fantastic over the I chord, the 6th is the 3rd of the IV chord, the 9th is the 5th of the V chord). You can also use chromatic passing tones in between those to spice things up.
