Members UFOScorpion Posted June 5, 2005 Members Posted June 5, 2005 The modes are based on the major scale, so you are on the right track. Learn it in all positions. It's a given that you need to learn all the notes of the fretboard. Many players try to learn scales or modes or whatever, but don't learn the notes. It's not as hard as you think (there are only 12 notes, and there's lots of duplication) and it's absolutely necessary. If you aren't willing to do that, you are fooling yourself. You don't need software or a wall-poster or sticky notes on the guitar fretboard or any of that. Youl need to learn two things - the chromatic scale, and the notes of the open strings. Then just pick/play each note, naming them, from any given string. Do this everytime you practice and in no time, you've got it. Next, see how the modes are based on the major scale, starting with a differnt note each time. C-major and A-minor (Aolean) are the same because they use the same notes A-B-C-D-E-F-G is the A-minor mode, starting on C you get C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C, which is the C-major (Ionian) mode. Same with E-minor and G-major. The other modes follow the same way. It's easy to see on a piano, using C-major, because the notes are the white keys. Start on C, you get Ionian, start on D, you get Dorian, on E you get Phrygian, etc. But - it's not C- Dorian or C-Phrygian, it's D-Dorian and E-Phrygian. So...learn the major scale, all over, and then you can go from there.
