John Petrucci's instructional video has a few cool tips for developing legato. One involves rolling the fingers in part of a scale back in forth. Example...first string, first position of A dorian has three notes, 5th, 7th and 8th frets. With one hand you hammer & pull off back in forth, 5-7-8-7-5-7-8-7. Do that on each string in a position.

Well if you want to stretch your fingers.. STRETCH THEM! what i mean by that is find scales that are pretty wide... take this one. 3-5-7.....3-5-7.. etc all the way to like the G string. and ive never tried it but ive heard they work magic, there called finger weights. There actual weights that you strap around your fingers and while you play you strengthen your fingers. So when you take em off its like you dont really even have to try. I thought it was kind of a crock of crap BUT ive heard some good things about em and i believe it now.
