Members Tatanka Posted August 21, 2005 Members Posted August 21, 2005 I would like to know if anyone here has the book Steve Vai published with transcriptions of several Frank Zappa's songs. With a group of friends would like to work on a version of Watermelon on Easter Hay. I found a website where the guy scanned the first three page of that song, but I would like to read Vai's version of the outro solo (the one with the fuzz). If any of you have than book or know where I can find it, I would like to ask for a scanned copy of that song (or a photocopy by snail mail...) Guys, any help with this will be gratly appreciated. Any info, please drop me a PM. Note: I am in no way trying to violate copyrights here, as I would happily buy a copy of the book if I find one... Many thanks in advance...Tatanka
Members jazzbo Posted August 21, 2005 Members Posted August 21, 2005 Went to the AddAll book site. It's out of print and rare, and expensive... got great songs in it though here is the link. http://www.addall.com/New/compare.cgi?dispCurr=USD&id=335747&isbn=0793524342&location=10000&thetime=20050820184617&author=&title=&state=AK BTW, what site posts the first three pages? I am curious to see what the transcription looks like...
Members Tatanka Posted August 21, 2005 Author Members Posted August 21, 2005 thanx for the replay.I saw that amazon has one copy for almost 400 bucks... I lost the link to the site: I found it more or less two years ago and ... never again. I have the .jpg of the firts pages of "Watermelon..." and I think two pages from "Black napkins". Members Tatanka Posted August 21, 2005 Author Members Posted August 21, 2005 this is the first of the three pages of Watermelon... the third ends after three bars of the central solo (where Vai added a note: "Fuzz ONLY")
Members Tatanka Posted August 21, 2005 Author Members Posted August 21, 2005 and the third page... it's all I have... The solo I would like to have is the one that starts on this page...

Members Li Shenron Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 I saw this book in the local library a few years ago. Now I have just checked and it's still there... it must be the next music score I borrow! => Five-five-five => Hog heaven => Shut up 'n play yer guitar => While you were out => Treacherous cretins => Heavy duty Judy => Soup 'n old clothes => Variations on the Carlos Santana secret chord progression => Gee, I like your pants => The deathless horsie => Shut up 'n play yer guitar some more => Pink napkins => Stucco homes => Theme from the 3rd movement of Sinister Footwear => Watermelon in Easter hay => Packard goose => Outside now => He used to cut the grass => Sheik Yerbouti tango => Rat Tomago => Mo' mama => Black napkins Watermelons is one of my favourite "solos" ever.

SWEET! Good find! You got a great library there! I share your sentiments on "Watermelon". Actually, it occured to me recently that, starting from after the words in "Outside Now", (i.e., the solo), from there on it's almost all solos. So now I think of Outside Now->Used to Cut the Grass->Packard Goose->Watermelon in Easter Hay as one incredible long guitar solo/suite/symphony - in parts. With that last one really the climax and one of the best of Zappa. Have fun learning it!
Members Dobbs Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 Jeez, someone need to actually release that thing so I can get a copy at a reasonable price. And to that guy who checked out a copy from his local library... scanner!

Besides jokes (and I don't have a scanner anyway ), I think that if these transcriptions aren't published anymore - which probably means it's not profitable to do so - they should be salvaged in electronic form and made public e.g. at libraries. This is one of the most famous guitarist's original transcriptions of the music of one of the most important composers of 1900... IMO it definitely has some historical value, and it's unfair if a publisher holds the right only to not release it to the public.
