Members Rocinante Posted August 20, 2005 Members Posted August 20, 2005 Does anyone know where I can find a source of stock guitar phrases to use over given chord progressions? Like the sort of exercises you find in guitar mags only all in one place and grouped by chord-progression?
Members Terje Posted August 21, 2005 Members Posted August 21, 2005 There's a book called The Bebop Bible that has only lots and lots of phrases over maj7th chords, minor 7th chords and dominant 7th chords. Listed by what note it starts on in relation to the chord. But it wouldn't work outside of the jazz field.

Members Terje Posted August 22, 2005 Members Posted August 22, 2005 As far as blues goes... you're gonna find your stock phrases in the music of T-Bone Walker, Elmore James and Robert Johnson. Stick with those three for awhile, copy everything you can, there are plenty of books that have transcriptions of their playing, and soon enough you'll know all the stock phrases that are actually ever used in blues (and rock too as a matter of fact).

Obviously I've got a lot of material in magazines, books, etc. but what I really want is to have access to these phrases in one place (without having to compile my own book), for teaching purposes and for my own use.

Members gennation Posted August 25, 2005 Members Posted August 25, 2005 Check out Guitar Axis . It's Don Mocks site (he's responsible for many of the instructional videos guys do). There's all sorts of stuff there from rock, jazz, bluegrass, just about everything. Sign up and be sure to check his 'hendrix chord' and 'ii-V-I' lessons. SOme of the best teaching stuff I've seen in years.
Members gennation Posted August 25, 2005 Members Posted August 25, 2005 Here's another great site that my son goes to frequently. It had audio and tab examples from some of the greatest rock guitar riffs ever... Enjoy

I highly recoommend the Wolf Marrshall "101 Must Know" book/CD series 101 Must Know Rock Licks101 Must Know Blues Licks101 Must Know Jazz Licks The chapters are grouped by style/era and he gives the harmonic annalysis of each line. He identifies the chord progression and gives excellent details where the melodic ideas are from. You can recognise which songs these licks are based on. Each book is pretty short, so I think you could get the rock and blues ones together as your lick encyclopedia. I don't know if he has one for country.
