Hi, I want to sound like Joe Pass.

But I'm too lazy to transcribe his stuff myself, and plus I have trouble hearing all the chords he uses in his chord solos and I'd never get the fingerings right anyways.

Does anyone know of a good book of transcriptions that has a good collection of his chord solos, preferably in staff notation as well as tab? (I read staff better than tab, but I want to get my fingers on teh right frets)

So far, this is what I've found, but it looks like it's mostly single note solos. I do like the fact that it comes with a CD. I may just get it :)

Wow, awesome replies, thanks!

Avril, I think that's exactly what I need. And if I want to hear the actual recordings, looks like they're all from these CDs

gennation, I can't find it on DVD (I don't have a VHS player), but I'll keep looking.

Thanks again! I'll be back in about 50 years when I can play like Joe :D

The book by Dan Towey is quite good. With the exception of one transcription, which is from the Joe and NHOP duet album "Chops," all the pieses are solo performances and the transcritptions are great.

Dan Towey also has another book out called "Jazz Guitar Chord Melodies for Solo Guitar" that's in the vien of Joe Pass playing. Unlike other chord melody books which just have the head to a tune harmonized, this one actually has several improvised choruses done for each tune.

If you really want to sound like Joe Pass you need to learn chord melodies and lots of different voicings. Like take the song Autumn Leaves:

Amin7 - be able to play that chord 4 different ways on the bottom 4 strings, 4 different ways on the middle 4 strings and then 4 different ways on the top 4 strings

so when you are playing those chords play the Amin scale on the top high string for each of the chords so you'll get like Amin9, Amin11 Amin 13, Amin, Amin6 whatever- you'll see you can play Amin soooooooo many different ways.

Now, do that for EVERY CHORD. good luck...lol
