Switching from bass to guitar...help!

My band recently lost our guitarist. I am the bassist/lead vocalist. Our drummer knows of a bassist that would be an excellent addition to our band for lots of reasons. This would require me to hop over to guitar. I have a pretty good working knowledge of chords, some scales, and can play fairly solidly as I typically write songs on the guitar. But I can't deny that I'm feeling like a fat-fingered, heavy-handed bassist. This seems to trip me up with leads and melodies, mostly. Can anyone suggest some exercises to try to get me more ready to play the guitar? Particularly going from rhythm to leads smoothly...developing a little bit of touch?
