Hello All,

I'm looking for a basic list of the different scales and their components. I searched through the forum but only found bits and pieces.

Thanks in advance !

Go here:
More scales than you can shake a stick at!

I think some of those are getting very obscure (I've never played or had a need to play the Hindustan, Arabian, or Byzantine scales before in my life). The original poster just wanted a list of basic scales.

I intentionally left modes out because they are sort of a part of the major scale, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales. In order to understand modes of those scales, those scales themselves must first be learned thoroughly, so I don't consider them "basic" scales. They're one step away from basic, and they are commonly used, but they're not on the ground floor.

He actually asked for "a basic list of the different scales", not a list of basic scales! :D

The link I gave gives you all of the above and more, so it is good even if you are just interested in the pentatonics and the modes.
