Members Virgman Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 I find myself downpicking the first note in each string by habit when going up this scale run. How do you folks do this? It's G-Ionian. I alternate pick on the way back. Am I hurting my play with the downpicking of the first notes? [ 5-7-8 [ 5-7-8 [ 4-5-7 [ 4-5-7 [ 3-5-7 [ 3-5-7 (Dang it! Tried to insert an image but no luck. I'm technically challenged. I got off the bus in the 80's.) Thanks.
Members GorillaLover Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 I found two things really helped big time with keeping my picking versatile for beginning on down or upstrokes.. 1. Practice doing 16th notes cleanly with a metronome.. often people revert to playing triplets when running 3-note-per-string patterns.. 2. Practice "inside" picking a lot... one easy way is to just ascend and descend with the following pattern with a STRICT alternate picking style no faster than you can do it cleanly.. and build from there (metronome !! yay!) excuse the rushed job.. and this is a pretty simple idea here, but it's very effective -----------------------------------4---4-5-4-5-7-5-7---7------ ----------------3---3-5-3-5-7-5-7---7------------------------- -3-5-3-5-7-5-7---7--------------------------------------------- basically, you'll be forced to switch from inside to outside picking every 2nd time you cross strings.. just try it and you'll see what I mean *there I edited it again.. the idea is there.. remember to do it ascending and descending.. my lines connect much much better now due to simple exercises like this*
Members buddastrat Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 I see a lot of people do that naturally. Some of the pros play that way as well, and they play very well, and lends itself to very fast lines. If it sounds even with the metronome, you're fine. If you want to take the more schooled approach ala John Petrucci or Steve Morse. You want to alternate pick every note. Then you could work at economy picking. You're half way there. But each approach has pros and cons for certain licks. Some guys try to practice all the methods, while others just go with one and do their own style. It's very good that you are aware of how you pick. That way you can control your direction and development.
Members GorillaLover Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 what the {censored}!! I edited that post until the tab came out perfectly!! now it's all reverted back to the original style... man I just don't have the effort in me to redo it..
Members buddastrat Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 I thought it was for a 12 string, and you actually can play only one string at a time! You da man!!
Members MrSteed Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 At the moment, I'm trying to keep to strict alternate. Alternatingstring changes switch between an inside and an outside pick.
