Members joegrant413 Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 I just play at home, and never cared for metronome. Thankfully, I'm finding it great to practice with some backing tracks - either MP3s or some MIDI stuff from the web. Anyway, I can now see it would be great to have something that would: - Have basic drum machine - Play MIDI - Do some looping - also nice if it would play MP3s or samples thereof - reasonably compact and easy to use - Not cost an arm and a leg (too much to ask, perhaps ) - Doesn't have to necessarily have superb sound quality, for the sake of compactness and cost. Any ideas? -- Joe
Members raggety Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 i got one of these http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM00/Content/ZOOM/HotPick/Zoom_PS-02.JPG it doesn't play midi, but it will loop drums and it works as a 3 track recorder and programmable drum machine. they are quite inexpensive second hand too
Members Fill Posted November 9, 2005 Members Posted November 9, 2005 You can get yourself a Roland MV-8000 for only $2300.MV-8000 Or maybe an SP-404 or an SP-606 would work. These are "affordable" according to the gear industry, though I myself consider them to be quite expensive.

Wow, $2300, $700, or $400 dollars... hmmm, sorry, but a tad more than I wanted to spend. But, who knows.... on eBay in 2007 maybe these prices will be half of what they are today! Thanks, I'm learning...-- Joe
Members joegrant413 Posted November 19, 2005 Author Members Posted November 19, 2005 How about the GNX4? I don't really want or need the amp modelling and effects, but it has all I want + 8 track recording. Are these units good? The one I saw was selling for $499 new --- more than I care to spend. I also saw a Digitech JamMan, which has Loopin, but no drum machine. -- Joe
Members joegrant413 Posted November 23, 2005 Author Members Posted November 23, 2005 The GNX3 can be had for $300 new on zZounds. Like the GNX4, it has the JamMan looper function, 8 track recorder, drum machine, plus hands-free operation of this stuff via pedals. For $300, I'm wondering if this 'workstation' could be one of the best values out there today for practice looping and drum machine stuff. The amp modelling and effects are just gravy, IMO.Whaddya' think?-- Joe
