Teachers,

My nephew is getting a Baby Taylor for Christmas (even though he wants a Rhodes Jackson V). As the guitar player in the family, I've been asked to provide lessons, which I gladly accept. I've already taught my 2 girls to play piano, so I'm not totally n00b to the teaching thing.

My question for the teachers is, what's the best overall method for teaching guitar to a beginner?

I've been leaning towards a CD ROM that he can take home and study without my help, and provide guidance once a week when I sit down with him face to face.

What products would the teachers recommended?

It's hard to find good books for kids that age. Whatever you use make sure it's not a Mel Bay publication.

It would be ideal for you to use one method book and one "Easy Guitar" fake book. Check this one out....

I was asked to give some lessons to the 10-year-old son of a fellow teacher. I provided him with some taped lessons (of the type that comes with some guitars, like Ibanez) after showing him some basics. He is motivated and his mom says he practices with the materials all the time. At some point he may need to come back for help, but he can do a lot on his own.
Here's the way I think of it - a beginner needs to learn the string names (and tuning), the notes of the fretboard (Yes, even a beginner should learn these ASAP), then open chords, barre chords, powere chords. They should learn single-note picking - where it's melodies or riffs or both. They should learn rhythm concepts like palm muting, boogie bass lines, etc.
Once they get basics down, they can start to learn songs if there is something that interests them. If they are not interested, they won't learn it. So if they like Green Day or Metallica or Tom Petty or whatever, that is a good place to start.
So....definitely find them something geared to the beginner - which will show them the basics and open chords. PM me if you want some from me.
