Members bertikus Posted December 31, 2005 Members Posted December 31, 2005 I hope no-one already made a thread like this but: What was the first riff you learned on guitar? (don't say Iron Man or Smoke on the Water) Mine was "Breakin' the Law" by Judas Priest. Members Nickdel Posted January 1, 2006 Members Posted January 1, 2006 The first thing I ever learned was the end tapping part to Eruption. I couldn't hold a pick, couldn't finger a chord, but I could tap that out like a madman.
Members nylon rock Posted January 1, 2006 Members Posted January 1, 2006 Before I even took up guitar, I believe my first riff, which was done on some friend's sister's classical guitar, was the riff that comes between the vocal parts of the Allman Brother's You Don't Love Me. It was easy after I tried it over and over, and several strings too to pull it off. But then did not know the chords that the song was composed of. This was back around 1970.
Members TaZMaNiO Posted January 1, 2006 Members Posted January 1, 2006 My first riff was Sunshine ofyour Love", played by ear on my Sears composite guitar when I was 11...BTW, I used to play "Breakin' The Law" in a cover band back in the eighties, and I played it in octave to pull-off the two gutiar effect very convincingly
Members jsacoustic Posted January 2, 2006 Members Posted January 2, 2006 The ascending scale riff to Tom Petty's "Breakdown". Mike Campbell, is way under rated, IMO.

Members soc_monki Posted January 3, 2006 Members Posted January 3, 2006 i learned how to strum "hey jude" by the beatles first, but learned a "riff" by playing "house of the rising sun". so take your pick... but if you mean rock or metal...i think the first metal stuff i started learning was Hanger 18 by Megadeth (about a year into playing LOL) or Cowboys from Hell by Pantera. i originally started playing so i could learn Enter Sandman, but didnt learn it for YEARS after i started...and when i did, i was already sick of the song LOL
Members bertikus Posted January 7, 2006 Author Members Posted January 7, 2006 It'd be cool if you guys posted tabs of the riff... even tho we already know a lot of them.
Members typedeaF Posted January 7, 2006 Members Posted January 7, 2006 Poison - Talk Dirty to Me I think anyone can figure it out. "Power" Chords (5ths) as follows. C - D - F# - G
Members Raths Posted January 7, 2006 Members Posted January 7, 2006 My "first riff" is the lead part of VH's "You Really Got Me". I'm actually working on learning the rest of the song now. But man can I get the 16 notes fast! L8R Raths
Members Slave_New_Wurld Posted January 8, 2006 Members Posted January 8, 2006 Alone and Easy Target off the Foo Fighter's first album. That opening riff is so unique, like all great intros.

Dave had some weird stuff on that album...i thought it was a great disc, as well as the Color and the Shape...after that though, the band kinda went...i dunno...weird? interesting fact though...Dave did all the drums then did all the bass, guitars, and vocals himself. did the drums with no click or scratch track...pretty gutsy move i think, not having anything to go by. but they were his songs and he knew how to play them.
