Members RaVenCAD Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 Hey guys, I'm looking for a DVD that will move my playing "to the next level", as they say. Right now, I'm pretty proficient with minor pents, chords and technique. But, beyond that, my modal theory and chord construction are very week. I have no desire to be a shredder, in fact I loathe guys like Petrucci and Vai. What I want is a DVD that explains why this mode or that mode works with this chord or that chord. I bought Fretboard Logic about a year ago, but due to health circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to ever use it, until now. I've still got it, but I can't locate it at the moment. It's in a box in the basement, but hell if I know which one lol I'll find it, and I know it's a good course to use, so other suggestions would be better. Right now, I'm leaning towards the Guitar Grimoire DVDs. Anyone want to change my mind?
Members 335clone Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 I like the Robben Ford "Blues and Beyond" DVD. If you want to jazz up your blues playing, check it out.
Members UFOScorpion Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 Modes for the Lead Guitarist by Tom Kolb does all that - but it may only be on VHS. It is worth many times its 9.99 price, on tape. Also, the Metal Method lesson that covers that is only about 14.95 (ck his site) - not sure if it's lesson 5 or 6 but he has descriptions on his site. You would also get some arpeggios and solos to work - and they are on DVD. Now that I reread your post - not much on chord construction in either of those. Never Mind. Members Eddie Posted January 12, 2006 Members Posted January 12, 2006 I think you'll be better off with a book. If you want the Grimoire series, definitely get a book and avoid the DVDs, unless you enjoy cheesy B movies. Some of the modes DVDs I've seen focus very little on theory and scale/chord relationships. Maybe Gambale's videos are great, but I have not seen those. I've read positive comments about the Metal Method mentioned above.
Members RaVenCAD Posted January 12, 2006 Author Members Posted January 12, 2006 I've got the Metal Method tapes from like 1989, and the modal theory lesson there never sank in. Might be the lesson, could be my thick skull. At the time, I didn't care much about it. Now I do, so maybe it would be worth watching again. The bad thing is that I no longer have the books for the tapes. So, I figured I'd find a new, more modern course to learn from. I've read about the cheese factor of the GG DVDs.. Not gonna go that route.

Members RaVenCAD Posted January 12, 2006 Author Members Posted January 12, 2006 That looks very good, and seems to cover what I'm looking for.. Do you actually own it? Is there a review of it on this board anywhere?
Members gennation Posted January 12, 2006 Members Posted January 12, 2006 Hey raven, how's it going. Have you checked my site out? There a lot of stuff there to definitely take your playing to the next level. The Advanced Pentatonic Tutorial with show you how to use different scales simultaniouly to play "music" instead of patterns. The Beginners to Advanced Series will show you some hardcore basic unstandings you're going to need if you do find some other instructions...it'll give you a great foundation for plowing foward with deeper concepts... There's also the Phrygian Dominant Tutorial that'll get you playing completely different than you do now probably. All of these things will have you looking at the fretboard in a whole different light. These are things I've been teaching for over 20 years now...successfully...I'm just making them available you people in your situation to pick up on some new stuff and to keep learning. You'll never look at the fretboard the same.
