Members paul6string Posted January 19, 2006 Members Posted January 19, 2006 In all my years playing guitar, one thing was never made clear to me. Where does "1st" position end, "2nd"position start, "3rd"position start/end etc.? I know all my modes, and can play anywhere on the neck etc., but never got the definition of "1st" "2nd"pos. etc. I've even sightread Bach Preludes, but never did positions ever come up.
Poparad Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Every position is four frets wide. Your index finger goes on the first fret in the position, middle on the second, ring on the third, and pinkie on the fourth. The position is named for the fret that your index finger is on, so for example, if your index finger is on the 5th fret, you are in 5th position. That position technically ends at the 8th fret, although you can stretch one fret in either direction to grab notes that are outside of the position.
