Why do they call tremolo picking tremolo picking?

Tremolo is actually a rapid reiteration of the same note. "To tremble" in Italian it seems. The tremolo could go up and down in volume. The best example of the tremolo, imo, is Tarrega's "Recuerdos De Alhambra".
