Members planet shh Posted February 10, 2006 Members Posted February 10, 2006 So after playing guitar for about six or seven years, I finally decided to spend some serious time just sitting and working on scales. So usually when I work on them I try and do a variety of things, but one of the things I find myself doing most is just doing one pluck of the string and then hammer-ons up the scale, and then the same thing going back down from high e, except doing pull-offs. The pull-offs are about three times as hard as the hammer-ons. My fingers are dying. I'm guessing this is normal. Any advice? Also, what scales would you suggest I work on most?
Members Knottyhed Posted February 10, 2006 Members Posted February 10, 2006 Keep working on it till your fingers get stronger. One point i'd make, only playing legato (i.e. hammer ons and pulloffs) is a bad habit. Learn to alternate pick you scales. G, C, E and A are *probably* the most common keys

G, C, E and A are *probably* the most common keys both are equally important. practice BOTH legato (hammer ons and pull offs) and alternate picking. for extra fun, try pulling off while going up the fretboard and hammering while going back down also try working up different note arrangements like, lets say you start at the 15th fret, then hammer on to the 19th and then pull off to the 17th, and do three note patterns like that going up and down the fretboard...or, do that pattern then hammer 15, 17, 19...and then go down to the next position and do the 14, 17, 15, 14, 15, 17, etc. lots of cool stuff you can do...remember, do it legato AND alternate pick it. then you can choose which will fit a piece better ps...my examples are in E minor i would learn C Major and G Major first (the minors of them are Em and Am, very popular Rock keys) and then go on from there...like F Major (D minor)...look at songs you like and learn the keys they are in, etc.
