can anyone recommend strings that aren't a common brand?

I've tried so many of the main commercially sold strings, and wondered if anyone used anything OTHER than stuff you buy at your neighborhood store. I'm speaking for both acoustic and electric... I'd love to hear your recommendations and maybe why they're different or better...

thanks. always looking for a tip to improve...

there's a big difference to me between slinky's and d'addarios, enough to enhance my playing - like a good setup, neck radius, etc.

that's what i'm always searching for as icing to my concentration on playing... good peripherals such as strings.

attention to detail.

Most brands of strings, especially the uncommon, off brand ones, are all the exact same string made at the exact same factory, except with a different logo on it.

With the exception of a couple very well known brands that do things a little differnetly (Elixir, to a lesser degree Ernie Ball), other than string gauge, you most likely could not tell the difference between string brands in a blindfold test.

Disagree..... this may be true in some cases but not all.... especially uncommon strings.

http://www.juststrings.com has the biggest collection of strings on the planet.

Thomastik-Infeld are a perfect example.... as well as Black Diamond. Totally different than say Ernie's Balls.

Thmastik's are the best string in the WORLD i.m.o. They sound different, last a super long time, and just plain out look cool.

Black Diamonds are the wierdest and I didn't like them too much. They should still be experienced. Black strings... need I say more.

D'Addario for everything.

As much as you swear by jazz..... You need to try out some Thomastik's and get off that D'Addario crap.

It's like the difference between McDonalds and my dad's homemade hamburgers..... or Pizza Hut vs. that crap they call Pizza in grade school.

Thomastik-Infelds rule!

This sounds like the School of "If it isnt what I like, it sucks". Lots of pro's use D'Addario. They arent crap. Please list some facts to enforce your opinion that they are crap or else it is just seen as nothing more than an opinion.

What are they made out of that makes them sound different and last longer?

Well.... to start with Thomastik's are made by hand with super tight quality controll. Every string is checked by hand for quality winding and material flaws. Plus they are made with some process that makes them look like bronze. ( I don't know if it's the type of metal or a process used in production.)

D'Addario spends more on advertisement and sponserships than they do "research and development" and production. They are the one of the biggest string maker on planet Earth. ( I have found that most companies who are on top maximize profits and let the underdogs worry about making a better product. It's the nature of buisness. )

Yes they are more expensive. On JustStrings.com D'Addario sells for 6.50 a set. I think Thomastik's are like $10-15 depending on what style.

Yes many pro's are sponsored by D'Addario. That doesn't mean anything. (except that lots of players are paid to promote that brand... hell I used them to if I was paid to.)

Are D'Addario's good strings..... you bet.

Are Thomastiks better....... I've never met a person who used them and didn't think so.

Hell they are good enough that I'm wasting all this time typing to inform you about these strings and I don't even work for Thomastik.

Buy a set and tell me what you think.

My favorites have been Maxima Gold, but they were discontinued a while ago. Once I'm out of those, I'll check out Snake Oil Strings.
http://www.sobstrings.net/

I have noticed differences among strings in terms of tone, durability, consistency, and longevity.

Check out http://www.webstrings.com. Lots of guys here are using their strings. It's my understanding that they produce strings for a lot of the other companies. I had just ordered about 25 sets (acoustic, electric, etc) and they seem to be working out for me really well. It was tough for me to switch because I've been using GHS Boomer 9's for years.

Wyres are better than elixirs in my opinion, but juststrings.com isn't going to carry them anymore because of the difficulty they were having trying to get them in.

I talked to one of the guys there when I picked them up, they're in the town I live in.

Personally, I'm a D'addario fan myself. I use the stainless steel ones, XLS, and have had great luck with them. I have a very light touch though and haven't broken a string in probably 5 years.

They changed the tone of my guitar for the better, really an awesome set of strings. I know every guitar has its own personality and these strings brought out the best I'ver known from my strat.

Try them, you won't be disappointed.

Everyone is different as far as the acid their fingers oils give off, diet, body chemistry, all that stuff. My fingers are toxic to guitar strings, must be all the pizza and beer. But a set of normal strings just doesn't hold up. Even when taking care to wipe them after playing they just don't last. I use the Elixir and they're great. They last a long time and keep a nice bright sound. Only drawback is the price. $10-$14 a set is a bit steep. I'll check out some of recommendations listed above.

as prevoiusly stated, you might want to give Wyres out for a try. They're not coated the same way that elixirs are. Look for the P.T.F.E ones. They have a teflon coating on them that breaks down as you play them and actually goes into the spaces between each wrap of the string. That way, since the spaces are fill with teflon, you can't fill it with the oil from your fingers. As opposed to elixirs where the coating just kind of falls off after a while. I want to say that the Wyres are less expensive, too.

I just restrung my acoustic with a set of Webstrings, and they sound great. The sound is a lot like D'Addario, actually. I previously had Ernie Ball Earthwood 80/20's on it, these Webstring Phosphor Bronze blow them out of the water.
