Members falcogreg Posted March 15, 2006 Members Posted March 15, 2006 I used to play over 30 years ago as a child and took lessons for a few years. I just bought a guitar a few weeks ago and am (re)teaching myself using stuff on the internet. I learned notes and chords as a child but never learned it the way I am now in terms of scales, octaves, etc. However, when I go to sites like "looknohands.com" and check out the scales section I am lost. If I pick any scale it shows a ton of notes and numbers but I have no way of reading this. So, is there another site that lays this info out more simply or clearly? Or can someone explain to me how to read this. I would like to understand this so I can practice this stuff. Any help will be appreciated. TIA,Greg
Members TubeAddict Posted March 15, 2006 Members Posted March 15, 2006 Here are some scale tabs to get you started:http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/misc_scales_tabs.htm The lines refer to the strings of the guitar and the numbers to which fret to use.
Members Knottyhed Posted March 15, 2006 Members Posted March 15, 2006 These patterns should be even clearerhttp://www.ibreathemusic.com/article/147/4I'd worry only about 2 scale patterns right now - the major and the pentatonic. Get these patterns down in 5 to 7 positions and you'll be able to play in any key anywhere on the neck.Gennation has a very well written website that explains intervals/scales/chords etc. etc.You can either search around and find a link to it on the forum, or wait an hour or so for Gennation to come here and tell you about it himself
Members Slave_New_Wurld Posted March 15, 2006 Members Posted March 15, 2006 A lot of websites are very good at presenting crappy wire diagrams that are rotated - this is stupid - a guitarist wants to see the fretboard from his/her perspective, looking over it as you do, horizontal, Fat E string at the bottom of your vision. My site isn't ready yet, but I'm working on diagrams that actually make sense and show how YOU see your guitar from your POV, rather than confuse beginners by rotating them round. You don't play a guitar vertically

What are you on about; both sites posted present the information in that exact manner - i.e. as you were looking over the top of the fretboard. Were you just talking generally or were you refering to the sites posted? Come to think of it though, i don't think I've ever seen a web site present tab or scale diagrams differently. They all look at it with the "fat E" at the bottom.

No I wasn't referring to the sites posted because the whole point in posting them was to provide clear diagrams so I trusted that's what was posted! You must've come across those traditional rotated wire diagrams - beginners just cannot grasp them clearly, they lead to mistakes and note misrepresentation, maybe even playing the damn scale/chord backwards. And I LIKE to call it the "fat E" Just , basically

Members falcogreg Posted March 16, 2006 Author Members Posted March 16, 2006 Thanks for the input. I'll check them out and let you know how I make out. Unfortunately, I sliced open my index and big finger at work today and had to get several stitches in each. So, I'll be out of commission for a few days so it may take a week or so. Slave_New World, let me know when you got your site going. I'd be happy to check it out and give you feedback from a newbie's POV.Cheers,Greg
